David Tennant is set to star in a new BBC drama about Manchester United and a plane crash that killed eight of the team’s players in 1958. The drama is based on the team at the time, known as the Busby Babes, and has been created using first-hand interviews with the survivors and their families.

Tennant will star as coach Jimmy Murphy, alongside Jack O’Connell as Bobby Charlton and Sam Claflin as player Duncan Edwards. The series is written by Chris Chibnall, whose credits include episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Executive producer Simon Heath said: “Chris Chibnall has written an authentic and moving version of this heartbreaking story, which with the help of a great cast, we hope will be a fitting tribute to those who survived and those who lost their lives at Munich.”

A Matter of Time: David Tennant

(18/04/1971)

Thirty-nine years ago today, David Tennant was born in Bathgate in Scotland. He would go on to become a famous British actor, most widely known in his role as the tenth incarnation of the Doctor, in the long running British science-fiction television series ‘Doctor Who’, which he played from 2005 to 2010.

Tennant’s name was originally put forward as a candidate for the ninth Doctor in 2004, although that role eventually went to Christopher Eccleston. After Eccleston announced on 31st March 2005 that he would not be returning for a second series, the BBC confirmed David Tennant as his replacement in a press release on 16th April 2005. He first appeared as the tenth Doctor at the end of ‘The Parting of the Ways’.

The Daily Mirror reported that David Tennant was forbidden from attending any Doctor Who fan conventions, to avoid the chance that he could accidentally reveal any plot ideas during the filming of the series. He said at the ‘Children in Need’ concert that his favourite Doctor Who story is ‘Genesis of the Daleks’, from Tom Baker’s first series.
