Doctor Who DVD Releases for 2011/2012

More information about the Doctor Who DVD releases for 2011 onwards has been revealed by Dan Hall, the DVD commissioning editor, during a question and answer session at the ‘Time and Space’ convention.

The new DVDs confirmed for release over the next few years include Planet of the Spiders, Shada, The Daemons, and more Revisitations.

• Planet of the Spiders
• Shada
• The Daemons
• Revisitations 2 (Carnival of Monsters, Resurrection of the Daleks)

Doctor Who - The Ark Coming Soon to DVD

The BBFC has classified a trailer for the First Doctor story ‘The Ark’, indicating that it will be released on DVD in early 2011. It was the sixth story to be shown in Season 3 of Doctor Who, and was first broadcast between 5th March and 26th March 1966.

The story stars William Hartnell as the First Doctor, with Jackie Lane as Dodo and Peter Purves as Steven Taylor. The adventure is set in the 57th segment of time, when the Earth has been destroyed by the sun going supernova. A giant spaceship carrying all of the Earth’s surviving life is on a 700 year journey to a new home on the planet Refusis II.

Forty-four years ago today, the first Doctor and his companions arrived ten million years into the future, on board a generation starship carrying the last of humanity away from the Earth as it was about to fall into the Sun. This adventure starred William Hartnell as the Doctor, Peter Purves as Steven Taylor, and Jackie Lane as Dodo Chaplet.

Although Lesley Scott is credited as a co-writer, she actually did very little work on the scripts. She was attempting to break into the screenwriting profession, so Erickson gave her a credit to help her along.

There are occasional slips by Jackie Lane where she speaks in the Cockney accent she had rehearsed in, before the production team were instructed that it was unacceptable for a regular character to speak in anything other than ‘BBC English’.

The Earth is seen trailing smoke as it heads towards the Sun at the end of Episode Two. However, it is said in the ninth Doctor’s adventure ‘The End of the World’ that the National Trust preserved it, and restored it into a ‘classic Earth’ before it was finally destroyed billions of years later.
