Doctor Who: The Adventure Games Download - Shadows of the Vashta Nerada

The fourth interactive Doctor Who story, ‘Shadows of the Vashta Nerada’, is now available to download from the official BBC website to UK households.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - 'Shadows of the Vashta Nerada'

The official Doctor Who website has revealed that the fourth story in The Adventure Games will be called ‘Shadows of the Vashta Nerada’. It will lead directly on from the cliffhanger of ‘TARDIS’, where the Doctor and Amy materialised inside a sea-bed colony called Poseidon.

“We've gone all-out for the season finale,” says Steven Moffat, executive producer and lead writer of Doctor Who. “Shadows of the Vashta Nerada takes place entirely underwater - something which would be impossible for the TV series, as water is so expensive. It's thrilling, terrifying, educational and fun. Just steer clear of those shadows...”

‘Shadows of the Vashta Nerada’ will be released simultaneously on PC and Mac and available for no extra cost to UK households. Users outside the UK will be able to purchase and download it at a later date.

'The Adventure Games' Confirmed for Series 2

The BBC have confirmed that a second series of ‘The Adventure Games’ has been commissioned for 2011, due to the success of the first run of stories. The first three interactive games pulled in 1.6 million downloads from the official BBC Doctor Who website.

However, the three games released so far have had mixed reviews from fans of the show, in particular the latest story ‘TARDIS’, which had a weak plotline and very little for the player to do.

The final interactive game from the first series is currently unnamed, but is believed to feature a giant shark monster, if the ending from the third game links directly into the fourth.

Karen Gillan Reveals Enemy in ‘TARDIS’

A new video of Karen Gillan has been posted on the official Doctor Who website, where she discusses the upcoming game ‘TARDIS’, and reveals the name of the enemy as the ‘Entity’.

The site will be updated with another video later in the week of Matt Smith, as well as some exclusive images and videos featuring the stars of TARDIS.

'The Adventure Games: TARDIS' Confirmed

The official BBC Website has revealed details about the third story to form ‘The Adventure Games’ series, and has confirmed the title of the episode as ‘TARDIS’.

It will feature monsters, terrifying new dangers for the Doctor and Amy, and offers an amazing insight into the world’s most famous blue box. It has also been announced that the game will give players the opportunity to pilot the Doctor’s iconic time machine.

“The game allows players to explore the Doctor's wondrous drawing room, featuring treasures and artefacts from his many adventures - a location specially created for the game, which will go on to form part of the Doctor Who canon.”

‘TARDIS’ will be released on 27th August 2010, and will be free for all users inside the United Kingdom. Users abroad will be able to purchase and download it on the same date.

The second official interactive game has now been confirmed as 'Blood of the Cybermen', and will feature the return of the popular metal human race.

The trailer for the game shows a Cybermat attacking Amy, a small mouse-like metal creature last seen in 'Revenge of the Cybermen'.

The Blink Review: City of the Daleks

After spending a tedious 20 minutes downloading the new interactive game, ‘City of the Daleks’, the moment had finally arrived to take on the challenge of playing as the Doctor. But after all the hype surrounding this adventure, was it actually worth the wait? Let the games begin…

The concept of an interactive adventure is exciting, and it could really work if a good story and fun game was combined, but in this case it wasn’t to be. The execution of the game was poor, with graphics that were oUt Of SyNc with the dialogue, even on the lowest possible setting, and games that just frustrated the player instead of challenging them.

The basis of the story is very simple; a world destroyed by the Daleks, which requires a quick trip to Skaro and a bit of sonic screwing to sort it out. How original. The producers add a bit of interest to the story when they introduce the character of Sylvia, the last survivor of the human race. This is soon ruined though, as after chasing her for a whole level in the underground, she’s exterminated by a Dalek. What was the point in that?

The worst factor of the game was the Daleks, who it appears have suddenly become blind and stupid. In order for a Dalek to detect your presence, you have to walk within its narrow green eye path, which only then starts sending off alarms. This in itself meant that they were very easy to get past, but then the Daleks don’t even bother to chase after you. They just sit there, guarding something for some reason that they never cared to state.

You may think that I am being a little harsh on this game, so I will try to focus more on the positives of the adventure. The animated characters looked very realistic, especially the detailed Doctor and Amy, and the interior and exterior design for the Dalek city was very impressive and original, whilst keeping the basic structural designs from the very first Dalek story.

My favourite part of the game was when we saw the new Dalek Emperor, in all its giant blue glory. The animators had obviously taken into account the design of the Emperor from ‘The Parting of the Ways’, and added the new features of the current Daleks to make it feel consistent. I also preferred the look of the Daleks in this story rather than in ‘Victory of the Daleks’, as they were grubbier with subtler tones, and had a less plastic texture about them.

However, I still felt that the games and the story let down this creation. The most irritating game was the electric maze, which was very repetitive and required a very steady hand, which I found impossible with the out-of-sync movements of the game.

Overall, I was annoyed by the game. There were some really good intentions in it, but when it came to the story and having fun and varied activities, it didn’t live up to expectations. After that painful experience, which clogged up my computer’s memory and sent it running slowly, there’s only one more thing left to do on that game. Right-click. Delete. Done.

All four of the downloadable adventure games will be free for PC and Mac users. This story will be the first time the Doctor travels to Kaalann, the Dalek capital city.

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games

The Doctor, Amy Pond and some of the show's most iconic monsters will be appearing in four interactive games, specially developed by Sumo Digital, one of the UK's best game designers. The stories and scripts were written by Phil Ford and James Moran, with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan providing full voice-overs.

The Adventure Games will offer fans of the Doctor a unique opportunity to enter his world, face his challenges and grapple with his deadliest foes. The first episode of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will be available to download for PC and Mac from the BBC Doctor Who website in June 2010.
