A Matter of Time: The War Machines

STORY: The First Doctor and his companion Dodo land in London, where they are unsettled by a strange energy source nearby. After visiting the newly completed Post Office Tower, the Doctor and Dodo meet Professor Brett, the creator of the problem-solving computer WOTAN. However, WOTAN has an entirely different agenda altogether…

FACTS:
• Working titles for this story included ‘The Computers’, and was based on an idea of Kit Pedler when he was interviewed for the job of science adviser on the show.
• Only one War Machine prop was actually constructed, with various changeable numbers to represent different machines.
• Jackie Lane’s contract expired halfway through production of this story, and as a result she never appears as the companion Dodo again after episode two, despite no departure scene or proper explanation.
