A Matter of Time: The Evil of the Daleks
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 01/07/1967
DOCTOR: Patrick Troughton
COMPANIONS: Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling
STORY: The Second Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon arrive at an antique shop run by Edward Waterfield, after searching for the TARDIS which has been stolen from them. However, they soon realise that something suspicious is occurring, as the Victorian antiques seem as though they were still new. In a secret room at the back of the shop, the Doctor’s oldest enemy waits in the shadows…
FACTS:
• ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ was wiped from the BBC’s archives in the late 1960s. Only Episode Two remains, in a tape-recording found at a car boot sale in 1987.
• It was initially intended to be the last Dalek story on Doctor Who, as writer Terry Nation, the creator of the Daleks, was trying to sell the Daleks to American television.
• The discovery of a behind-the-scenes film, ‘The Last Dalek’, made by the special effects team as they worked on the story’s conclusion, was used to recreate the climactic battle scenes.
