A Matter of Time: Colin Baker

(08/06/1943)

Colin Baker is an English actor, who is best known for playing the character of the Sixth Doctor in the science fiction series Doctor Who, from 1984 to 1986. He was born in London, and originally studied to be a solicitor, before moving on to acting at the age of 23.

• Baker made his first appearance in Doctor Who as Commander Maxil in the Peter Davison story ‘Arc of Infinity’, where he got to shoot the current Doctor.
• His first appearance as the Doctor was in the closing moments of ‘The Caves of Androzani’, where he delivered his first iconic lines.
• Despite Baker’s problematic time in the role, including the tragic death of his son Jack, the 18-month hiatus which followed his first full season, and finally his high-profile sacking, Baker remains enthusiastic about his time as the Doctor.
