A Matter of Time: The Seeds of Doom

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 06/03/1976

Thirty-four years ago today, UNIT appeared in their last story of Doctor Who until 1989's ‘Battlefield’, starring Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as his companion Sarah Jane Smith. None of the established UNIT characters are seen in this story, as it was felt that there was too little material to warrant bringing back Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Sergeant Benton.

The main enemy in this story is a Krynoid, a living plant creature. Cuttings of the Krynoid from this story are kept, leading to the events in the Eighth Doctor’s audio story ‘Hothouse’. This monster is not too dissimilar to the Triffid creatures from John Wyndham’s popular novel, ‘The Day of the Triffids’, which would be adapted into a television series in 1981 and 2009.

A few weeks before the story was due to begin its original transmission, the master tape for the first episode was found to be missing. A brief panic ensued and producer Philip Hinchcliffe began planning a re-edit of the second episode, allowing the story to begin at this point. Fortunately, the tape of the opening episode was eventually located, having been misplaced in the tape storage system.
