A Matter of Time: Marco Polo

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 07/03/1964

Forty-six years ago today, The TARDIS crew landed in the Himalayas in 1289, and were picked up by Marco Polo's caravan on its way along the fabled Silk Road to see the Emperor Kublai Khan. This story starred William Hartnell as the first Doctor.

Historical episodes such as Marco Polo, that feature no further science fiction elements, were relatively common for the first few seasons of Doctor Who. This story is notable for featuring many educational elements, both historical and scientific, as was originally part of the show's aim. The next historical adventure arrived later in the first season with The Aztecs.

This is one of only three stories, along with Mission to the Unknown and The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve, of which not a frame of footage survives. Images of the show during transmission were photographed from a television set, which are now held by the story's director, Waris Hussein. The audio soundtrack is also intact, having been recorded off air during the original television transmissions. The irony is that Marco Polo was the most widely sold abroad of all the missing stories.
