A Matter of Time: Vincent van Gogh
(30/03/1853 – 29/07/1890)
Vincent van Gogh was a famous Dutch painter of the late nineteenth century, and is considered by many to be the greatest artist that ever lived. Van Gogh suffered from intense mental illness, including bipolar disorder and bouts of anxiety. He died at the young age of 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and would not be appreciated until after his death.
• Vincent van Gogh was sent to France by his brother Theo in order to gain experience from other painters, however he ended up alone and gained a reputation among the locals as a madman and drunkard.
• ‘Vincent and the Doctor’ was a groundbreaking episode of Doctor Who by Richard Curtis, and saw Tony Curran take on the role of the troubled painter.
• The fictional story showed The Doctor taking Van Gogh to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, where he got to see the true impact that he had created from his art.
