Blink’s reflection on the last year…
A very intelligent man once said “Time flies when you’re having fun”, and never has this been the case more than in the last thirteen weeks, when we have watched Matt Smith and Karen Gillan embark on the greatest trip of their lifetime. But as we watch more and more episodes of the series, we begin to forget what it was like to discover every small fact from the episode, whether it be who would play the Doctor, what the new Daleks would look like, or why Steven Moffat would possibly want to bring back every foe…
Now all of those questions are answered, and it’s time to begin the long process once more, of studying the filming of the sixth series of Doctor Who.
It seems hardly any time ago that we were reading stories in the newspapers about the first day of shooting on the series, and found out the costume of the Eleventh Doctor. Then we found out about the return of Alex Kingston, the Daleks, the Weeping Angels, the Silurians, William Hartnell (4 times!), and many more…
Finally, after the broadcast of ‘The End of Time – Part 2’, we got to see the first proper look at the new series, with real footage form the episodes and a very dramatic score in the background, ‘Two Steps from Hell’, which I love so much that it’s on my i-Pod!
Then came the announcement of a second trailer, which was broadcast on 20th February 2010, the day that this very blog opened up! The trailer was naff though, it was just Matt and Karen falling through a time vortex whilst wrestling some old foes. This disappointing trailer naturally led to a sudden panic between fans, saying that the whole series would be poor like this advert. What, do you really think that all 13 episodes would just have them falling through a vortex?!
Moving along to the end of March, we get the Press Launch of ‘The Eleventh Hour’, with Lizo Mzimba twittering that the episode was very good, and teasing us about future episodes of the series. Humph! I wanted to see it then!
But we didn’t have to wait long, because on 3rd April 2010 the first episode of Series 5 was going to be… “WHAT’S THAT? THE TAPES HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM THE BBC? APRIL FOOL!” … broadcast to every television in the UK. Finally, something worth watching! ‘Over the Rainbow’ was hardly good Saturday night viewing! Damn you Norton, you better not return in Series 6!
So there we go, a whole year summarised in a few paragraphs. Here’s to the next year of Doctor Who adventures, and get the paparazzi camera ready…
