A Matter of Time: Rise of the Cybermen

Four years ago today, the tenth Doctor and his companions Rose and Mickey crashed through a fiery void, into a parallel universe of the planet Earth. They soon discover that not all is well, as Rose’s deceased father Pete Tyler is alive in this world, and helping John Lumic to create a new race of metal monsters. This story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, and Noel Clarke as Mickey Smith.

This story takes place on a parallel Earth, where a new version of Cybermen is being created. A parallel version of Earth, complete with counterparts to familiar characters, was previously seen in the third Doctor story ‘Inferno’. The face of Big Ben on the parallel Earth is seen to have a square face instead of a round one. However, when next seen in ‘The Age of Steel’, it has reverted to a round face.

Rose refers to the original Cybermen in this two-part story, having seen the head of one from ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’ in the museum of Henry Van Statten. The new Cybermen in this episode have the catchphrase of ‘Delete!’, which can be compared to the Daleks’ famous catchphrase of ‘Exterminate!’.
