Thirty-five years ago today, the fourth Doctor and his companions Sarah and Harry returned to Spacestation Nerva, where they discovered an ancient enemy that the Doctor had believed were extinct. The Cyberman were back, with a new Leader and dangerous weapons in their heads. This story starred Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, and Ian Marter as Harry Sullivan.
This story features the first appearance of the Cyber Leader, who is distinguished from the other Cybermen by the black trimmings on his helmet. It was also the first story to feature the Cybermen since the second Doctor story ‘The Invasion’, which had aired seven years previously. The Cybermats make their final appearance in this story, with a complete redesign of flat worm-like bodies.
This story had the working title of ‘Return of the Cybermen’, due to their long absence in the show. This story was shot on the same set as ‘The Ark in Space’ as they are both set on Spacestation Nerva. This saved a lot of money in production, and allowed the team to spend money on location filming at the Wookey Hole Caves. The Vogans’ symbol used in this story would later be used by the Time Lords as the Seal of Rassilon, although there is no explanation as to why they share the same symbol.
