A Matter of Time: The Lazarus Experiment
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 05/05/2007
Three years ago today, the Doctor and his companion Martha returned to the present day in London, where they attended a scientific demonstration by Professor Lazarus. However, when the experiment goes wrong, a horrific product of genetic mutation is unleashed, leaving a trail of death. This story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor, and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones.
Executive Producer Russell T Davies told the writer of the episode, Stephen Greenhorn, to base this episode on a typical ‘Marvel Comics’ plotline, where a good old mad scientist carries out an experiment which goes horribly wrong, and an outrageous supervillain is on the loose.
Mark Gatiss appears in this episode as both the old and young Professor Lazarus, making him one of very few people to have both been a writer for and acted in the show. Gatiss had previously written ‘The Unquiet Dead’ and ‘The Idiot's Lantern’, and would go on to write ‘Victory of the Daleks’. Victor Pemberton and Glyn Jones have similarly written for and acted in Doctor Who.
