A Matter of Time: The Keys of Marinus
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 16/05/1963
Forty-five years ago today, the Doctor and his companions arrived on the planet Marinus, where they were set the task of recovering keys from several different locations, in order to stop the leader of the Voord. This story starred William Hartnell as the first Doctor, William Russell as Ian Chesterton, Jacqueline Hill as Barbara Wright, and Carole Ann Ford as Susan.
The Keys of Marinus was written to replace a different script, ‘The Hidden Planet’, which was considered too problematic for the small budget. Because the replacement script had to be written quickly, it was decided to base it around a series of largely separate episodes, each with a different setting and cast, to make it easier to write in a short time.
The story was released on DVD on 21st September 2009. Although the story was previously thought of as complete, it was discovered during the remastering for the DVD that episodes Two and Four were edited from the originally broadcast versions. These cuts were reinstated using off-air audio recordings and other visual material.
