A Matter of Time: The Girl in the Fireplace
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 06/05/2006
Four years ago today, the tenth Doctor and his companions Rose and Mickey travelled to the fifty-first century, where they found the mysterious life of a Victorian girl scattered around a spaceship. However, soon they must face the sinister clockwork men who have come to haunt the child. This story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, and Noel Clarke as Mickey Smith.
Although the episode appears to take place immediately after the previous episode, ‘School Reunion’, Rose’s bitter attitude towards Mickey joining the crew suddenly disappears at the beginning of this episode, as Steven Moffat had not read the end of ‘School Reunion’ when he was writing the script. After reading the Doctor’s mind, Reinette says ‘Doctor who?’, a reference to the show’s title.
The ballroom scenes of Versailles were filmed in Ragley Hall in Warwickshire. The production team used two horses in the episode, called Bolero and Arthur. Bolero was used for the claustrophobic scenes on the spaceship, and Arthur was used for the difficult jumps. They were not allowed to bring the horse into the ballroom for the climactic scene, so The Mill needed to composite pieces of real life and computerised images together to create the finished picture.
