A Matter of Time: School Reunion
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 29/04/2006
Four years ago today, the tenth Doctor and his companion Rose travelled to the present day, where he was reunited with former companion Sarah Jane Smith, who had previously travelled with the third and fourth Doctors. Together they discover an evil race known as the Krillitanes, and need the assisstance of a famous tin dog to save the world. This story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith.
The concept of a former companion returning was an idea of Russell T Davies, when he was pitching the show in 2003. This allowed the audience to see what happens after a companion leaves the Doctor, without focussing too much on the classic series. Although Elisabeth Sladen originally denied the request, thinking that her role would not be important, she changed her mind when she saw the final script.
K-9 also makes a return in this episode, as Sarah Jane’s pet dog. K-9’s lights were originally intended to flash when he said his lines, but Phil Collinson decided against this idea as he felt that it was too similar to the Daleks. After production of the episode was finished, Elisabeth Sladen was approached to star in a full spin-off series, ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’, which was officially announced on 14th September 2006.
