A Matter of Time: Planet of the Dead
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 11/04/2009
One year ago today, the Doctor was fighting for survival on the planet San Helios, after a London bus had travelled through a wormhole in space, trapping him and several passengers on the desert planet. This story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor, with Michelle Ryan as the one-off companion Lady Christina de Souza.
To make the desert scenes look as realistic as possible, the production team filmed in Dubai for three days. Two weeks previously to the filming, one of the two London double-decker buses had been largely damaged, after a crane had accidentally dropped a container in Dubai City Port.
This severely troubled the production team, with the possibility that the filming would have to move to a beach in Wales. However, Russell T Davies decided to add an explanation for the damage in the script, whilst the production team partially reconstructed the bus in Dubai, and the spare bus in Cardiff was damaged to match the bus in Dubai.
The damaged bus was not the only problem during filming in Dubai, with the first of the three days being badly affected by a sandstorm, leaving most of the footage shot unusable. After filming ended, editing and post-processing took place until two days before the actual transmission, leaving the BBC to resort to using an unfinished copy to market the episode.
