A Matter of Time: New Earth

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 15/04/2006

Four years ago today, the newly regenerated tenth Doctor and his companion Rose travelled to the future, in the year five billion and twenty-three. They land on a planet known as New Earth, the home of humans after the destruction of the Earth. However, an old enemy lays deep beneath the hospital, and the Sisters of Plenitude hold terrible secrets in the intensive care chamber. This story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler.

This story is the first episode of the revived series to be set on a planet other than Earth, although references to adventures on other planets had been made previously in ‘Boom Town’. Despite the Doctor saying that the elevators had been deactivated as a precaution during the quarantine, a CGI external shot of the building during this time clearly shows that the elevators are still moving.

Russell T Davies originally intended the Face of Boe to reveal the great secret to the Doctor in this episode, until he discovered that a third series was definitely going to occur, and he delayed the message for a year. This is one of several plot details and even episodes that Davies chose to move from series two to three, including what would become the 2006 Christmas Special ‘The Runaway Bride’.
