A Matter of Time: The Faceless Ones

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 08/04/1967

Forty-three years ago today, the Doctor and his companions Ben, Polly and Jamie arrived on a runway at Gatwick Airport, where they had to split up to avoid being arrested by the police. Polly fless to a store room belonging to the mysterious travel company ‘Chameleon Tours’, where she sees a man killed by a futuristic weapon. This story starred Patrick Troughton as the second Doctor.

Working titles for this story included ‘The Chameleons’. It was originally planned to appear in a William Hartnell story called ‘The Big Store’, in which aliens occupied mannequins in a busy department store, while waiting for human hosts to possess. The idea was adapted for the Troughton era, and its setting was changed to a city airport.

This story was filmed on location at London Gatwick Airport, although Heathrow had also accepted the production team’s offer. ‘Doctor Who’ would go on to film at Heathrow for the Peter Davison story ‘Time-Flight’ in 1982. Only episodes one and three of this story exist in the BBC archives. They also own an incomplete print of episode one from Australia, where they had removed scenes considered to be too scary.
