A Matter of Time: Exit Wounds

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 04/04/2008

Two years ago today, the Torchwood team began their thirteenth and final adventure of the second series, starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper. Unlike the rest of the series, it was first broadcast on BBC Two, without having previously been shown on BBC Three. It was also available as an edited version, in order for a younger audience to be able to enjoy the Doctor Who spin-off series.

When Owen Harper and Toshiko Sato are discussing their early days together, Tosh describes pretending to be a medic in Owen's second week, to cover for him having a hangover. Owen asks if this was ‘the space pig’, referring to Naoko Mori's appearance as Doctor Sato, a presumed pathologist in the Doctor Who story ‘Aliens of London’. A creature known as the ‘Hoix’ appears in this episode, after previously being seen briefly in the Doctor Who episode ‘Love and Monsters’.

This episode contains some curious plot flaws, in particular Jack’s clothes surviving after being buried in the soil for 1854 years. Despite having the futuristic technology to cryogenically suspend life, accurately schedule defrosting, and detect the signals from the buried ring, Torchwood 3 still uses contemporary gas lighting in the Edwardian era.
