A Matter of Time: The Space Pirates

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 29/03/1969

Thirty-nine years ago today, the second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon and Zoe Heriot arrived on Beacon Alpha Four, minutes before sinister pirates invaded it. Space beacons on the space lanes are being blown up, and robbed by the pirates for precious aragonite. This story starred Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, in his last series as the Time Lord.

This story was written as a replacement for ‘The Dream Spinner’ by Paul Wheeler, which was dropped at a late stage in production for technical reasons. Patrick Troughton, Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury were all away on location filming for ‘The War Games’ during the production of episode six, and only appear in pre-recorded inserts.

The entire of this story, except for episode two, is missing from the BBC archives. Pre-filmed inserts from Episode 1 also exist, as well as the audio soundtrack for all episodes. In 1998, an episode of this story was discovered in the collection of an amateur video enthusiast. This episode was the earliest known existing off-air recording of Doctor Who, but unfortunately it was of the already-existing episode two. The Space Pirates is the last story of which episodes are missing.

I'm not entirely sure because it is missing, but I believe that you see them leave in one of the pre-recorded inserts, before they had left for The War Games.
