A Matter of Time: Smith and Jones
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 31/03/2007
Three years ago today, Doctor Who returned to our screens for its third series in the new generation, with David Tennant returning for his second series as the tenth Doctor, and Freema Agyeman making her debut as the new companion Martha Jones. She had previously appeared as Adeola Oshodi in the penultimate episode of the last series, ‘Army of Ghosts’, where she was converted into a Cyberman.
In this story, the Doctor is able to focus Röntgen radiation into his left shoe, showing no real signs of damage to his health. However, he is severely susceptible to excessive radiation, which caused the death of his Doctor in ‘The End of Time’, as well as the third Doctor in ‘Planet of the Spiders’.
The events of this episode are revisited in the 2008 episode ‘Turn Left’, where Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson and Clyde Langer are supposedly killed in an alternative timeline, whilst stopping the Plasmavore. Two specially created trailers for the third series were shown on the BBC in the two weeks before broadcast. These trailers featured many clips from the series, mainly from ‘Smith and Jones’.
