A Matter of Time: Edwin Richfield

(11/09/1921 – 02/08/1990)

Edwin Richfield was an English actor of the twentieth century, whose numerous film credits included the famous ‘Quatermass and the Pit’ and ‘The Camp on Blood Island’. He also appeared in many popular television series including ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Z Cars’, as well as two stories of ‘Doctor Who’.

• Richfield played the character of Captain John Hart in the Jon Pertwee story ‘The Sea Devils’ in 1972.
• He would later play the humanoid slug character of Mestor in Colin Baker’s first story ‘The Twin Dilemma’ in 1984.
• The appalling giant slug costume which he wore made Mestor arguably the worst monster in Doctor Who history, although this was of no fault to Richfield.
