A Matter of Time: Catherine Tate

(12/05/1968)

Forty-two years ago today, Catherine Tate was born with the name of Catherine Ford in Bloomsbury. In 2004, the BBC gave Tate her own comedy programme on BBC Two, called ‘The Catherine Tate Show’. She later appeared in the Doctor Who 2006 Christmas Special ‘The Runaway Bride’, where she played the companion character of Donna Noble.

Catherine Tate returned to Doctor Who in 2008 to reprise the role of Donna Noble, as the Doctor’s companion throughout the entire fourth series, which was shown on BBC One from 5th April 2008 for a 13-week run. When it was announced that she would be returning for the fourth series, Tate said, “I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey.”

At the TV Quick Awards in 2008, Tate was voted the best actress for her role in Doctor Who. She later returned as Donna Noble again in the two-part Doctor Who Christmas Special ‘The End of Time’, which was broadcast over Christmas 2009. This story did not include her character as much as in previous episodes, as it mainly focussed on the fact that David Tennant was leaving.
