A Matter of Time: Genesis of the Daleks

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 08/03/1975

The eighth of March is a significant date in Doctor Who’s history, as three of its best stories originally aired on this date. These stories are ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ starring Tom Baker, and ‘Earthshock’ and ‘The Caves of Androzani’ starring Peter Davison.

Thirty-five years ago today, the Daleks appeared in their eleventh television adventure, set on the planet Skaro before their new race had been established. This story allowed the viewers to see the origins of their favourite enemy, and introduced the character of Davros as the creator of the Daleks.

Although he is apparently destroyed in this story, he would return in ‘Destiny of the Daleks’, having survived when his life support system placed him in a form of hibernation. All later Dalek stories in the original series would feature Davros, although he would not return in the revived series until ‘The Stolen Earth’, as Russell T Davies wanted to re-establish the Daleks first.

Terry Nation, the creator of the Daleks, supposedly based them on the Nazis. This story is filled with parallels, such as a madman leading his own race to its destruction, a security service killing anybody that gets in their way, and all of the decisions being made in a bunker. Genesis of the Daleks has often been voted the best story in the whole of Doctor Who, and with its captivating storyline and parallels to the real world, it’s not hard to see why.
