A Matter of Time: Frontier in Space
ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 10/03/1973
Thirty-seven years ago today, Roger Delgado’s Master appeared in his last ever adventure, starring Jon Pertwee as the Doctor. His final scene is outside the TARDIS in amongst all the confusion, where he shoots the Doctor before disappearing with the panicking Ogrons. Roger Delgado was meant to return the following season, but was sadly killed in a car crash in Turkey less than three months after this episode was broadcast.
The final sequence in the Master's headquarters was intended to contain the giant Ogron-eating monster, but director Paul Bernard did not like the costume and deleted the majority of the scene, leaving just frightened Ogrons running away from an unseen monster.
Producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks felt that the sequence lacked impact, and a new ending was filmed in the TARDIS during the production of Planet of the Daleks. The last episode ends on the cliffhanger of the Doctor seriously injured, and sending a message about the Daleks to the Time Lords.
