A Matter of Time: Daleks in Manhattan

ORIGINAL BROADCAST: 21/04/2007

Three years ago today, the Doctor and his new companion Martha travelled to the original city of New York, after visiting the future fifteenth version, where they would have to encounter the Doctor’s oldest and most deadly enemy of all time. This first part of the story is often seen as the better, due to the largely unpopular Human Dalek in ‘Evolution of the Daleks’. This story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor, and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones.

All of the scenes where the Doctor and Martha stand in front of the Statue of Liberty were actually filmed in Wales. The production team found a wall that matched the base of the statue, and then The Mill added the famous sculpture on top. Some filming for this story was done in New York for plates of the city, including images of Central Park, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty.

The week before the transmission of this episode, the ‘Radio Times’ cover showed a photograph of the Human Dalek hybrid. It was played by Eric Loren, who also played Mr Diagoras in the story. The decision to reveal the hybrid on the cover caused controversy, with many fans complaining that it was a major spoiler, as the appearance of the Human Dalek is the episode’s huge cliffhanger.
