Forty-three years ago today, the Cybermen appeared in their second television adventure, starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor. Despite the fact that the Cybermen had only appeared in The Tenth Planet prior to this story, they went under a huge change in design. Previously their human hands had been visible, they had a huge light on top of their head, and their faces were only covered by a cloth.
The original title for this story was The Return of the Cybermen, and it had been commissioned before the last episode of The Tenth Planet was broadcast, due to the positive response about the Cybermen.
This story features the debut of actor John Levene as a Cyberman. Levene would return as a Yeti in The Web of Fear (1968), and would go on to play the returning character of Sergeant Benton throughout the Pertwee years.
